Arnauld, Antoine

Arnauld, Antoine
(1612–94)
   Theologian.
The brother of Mère Angélique, the formidable Abbess and reformer of the Convent of Port-Royal, Arnauld was born in Paris. He was educated at the Sorbonne and was under the spiritual direction of the Abbé de Saint-Cyran. He was ordained in 1641 and became a prominent spokesman for Jansenism. He was the author of De Ia Fréquente Communion and the Apologie de M. Jansenius; both books caused considerable controversy and in 1656 he was censured by the Sorbonne for his teachings against the Jesuit methods of hearing confessions. His doctorate was restored in 1669 and he began an important treatise against the Calvinists, La Perpétuité de la Foi Catholique Touchant l’Eucharistie. In 1679 he moved to Brussels to avoid further religious controversy; there he continued to write until his death. Arnauld is remembered as the most successful proponent of Jansenism of his time.
